Duck Race 2011
Middletown Education Collaborative held its 5th Annual Rubber Duck Race on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at Third Beach in Middletown RI. Hundreds of rubber ducks raced in the event that raises money to fund educational programs for Middletown public school students.
The MEC Duck Race, sponsored by People’s Credit Union, featured a rubber duck race, as well as family-friendly beach games, face-painting, crafts, food and music. But the main event was the duck race, where the winning duck won $1000 for its number-holder.
How It Works: Each duck that races is sponsored for $10 prior to the race. When you sponsor a duck you are assigned a number (think of it like a raffle ticket number), that corresponds with a numbered duck. If the duck with your corresponding number crosses the finish line first, you win the race. Winners do not have to be present to win. Prizes are awarded to the first 10 ducks to cross the finish line.
This year our ducks raced for the following prizes: First Prize – $1000, Second Prize – $350 and Third Prize – $150. Fourth through tenth place prizes included Newport Gulls camp vouchers, Elemental Surf and Skate Surf Camp, shrubbery from Moore Blooms, Sweetberry Farm gift certificates, Frosty Freeze t-shirts, restaurant gift certificates, and more.
We want to thank our major sponsor People’s Credit Union for their support throughout the year, Best Buy of Middletown for donating an Apple iPad for our duck sponsorship drive, Flat Waves Restaurant of Middletown and Del’s Lemonade Truck for providing food and refreshments to all attending the MEC Duck Race. A portion of all food sales were donated to the Middletown Education Collaborative. We would also like to thank the many businesses in our community who donated items for our prizes. Their continued support is crucial to our fundraising efforts for Middletown’s public school students.
